Nine people, including a three-year-old, were home when fire broke out at a Grove Street address shortly before 3 a.m. Seven people escaped the home unharmed, while another man suffered non-life-threatening burns to his back as well as smoke inhalation.
The woman, however, was trapped inside, witnesses told police and firefighters responding to the scene. Estefanie Brizuela-Garcia, 22, was later found inside the home. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine Brizuela-Garcia's cause of death, the prosecutor's office said.
The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office asks anyone with information to call (908) 231-7100, or to call North Plainfield police at 908-769-2937.
Family members of Brizuela-Garcia have started a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral costs.
